Starlight
The Cottontail Bunny

Orphaned bunny

This baby cottontail rabbit was very lucky! We rescued her from the mouth of one of our dogs! At first we thought the dog had a mouse, but when we realized it was a baby rabbit, we made the dog release her. Since we could not find out where the rabbit's nest was, we decided to try and raise her. We named her Starlight.

Our veterinarian told us how to mix just the right amount of goat's milk, Karo syrup, and egg, which we fed her with an eyedropper. She soon learned what it was and was very happy to have something to eat! When she got old enough, she also started nibbling on the hay and pellets we had for her.

Hannah and Starlight

Since Starlight is a wild rabbit, she would not be happy as a pet. Now that she's big enough to take care of herself, it's time to let her go. We will miss her, but we know she will be much happier in the wild. We found a nice area in the field to release her. (Far away from the dogs!)

After we let her go, Starlight hopped around for awhile before deciding on a nice place to live. She eventually decided on a small mound of tree limbs covered with grass. (It looks like a black hole in the background of the picture where Hannah's holding her.) We were glad she didn't run away before we could take some pictures to remember her by! We often see rabbits hopping around in the fields, so maybe we'll get to see her again sometime.

Starlight

Goodbye, Starlight! We'll miss you! Be safe.
